Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

RentPins ("we", "us", "our") operates the website rentpins.com — a map-based platform that connects property owners directly with people looking for rental accommodation, with no intermediary brokers.

2. Information we collect

Information you provide

  • Account details: name, phone number, and optionally email address and password
  • Property details: title, type, rent, address, coordinates (latitude/longitude), and description
  • Contact requests: records of requests made between renters and property owners

Information collected automatically

  • IP address (used solely for rate limiting to prevent abuse)
  • Your device's approximate GPS location, only when you explicitly grant permission, to show nearby properties

3. How we use your information

  • To create and manage your account
  • To display your property listing on the public map (only properties you choose to list)
  • To facilitate contact requests between owners and renters
  • To send you notifications when someone requests your contact details (if you are an owner)
  • To prevent fraud, abuse, and automated attacks

4. What is shared publicly

When you list a property, the following is visible to anyone on the map:

  • Property title, type, rent, address, and description
  • The pin location on the map
  • Your name (as the owner)

Phone number: Your phone number is nevershown publicly unless you explicitly choose "Show to everyone" when listing. When set to "Only after approval", your number is only revealed to a renter after you manually approve their contact request.

5. Data retention

Your account and property data is retained as long as your account is active. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data by contacting us. Deleted data cannot be recovered.

6. Security

We store passwords using bcrypt hashing and never in plain text. Authentication tokens are signed with HMAC-SHA256, are short-lived (30 days), and are stored in httpOnly cookies that cannot be accessed by JavaScript. We use HTTPS in production.

7. Third-party services

  • OpenStreetMap / Nominatim: used for address search and reverse geocoding. Your search queries are sent to their servers. See OSM Privacy Policy.
  • Google Maps (optional): if enabled as your map provider, subject to Google's Privacy Policy.

8. Your rights

You have the right to access, correct, or delete your personal data. To exercise these rights, contact us. We will respond within 30 days.

9. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy. When we do, we will update the effective date at the top. Continued use of RentPins after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
